OTHER THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

LICENSE.  Anyone with a valid license can drive. “Valid” means a Costa Rican license, or a foreign or international license if the driver last entered the country less than 90 days ago and is 18 or over.

OBLIGATORY.  This is NOT the “obligatory insurance”: it is optional, so nobody has authority to request to see your policy.  But carry your policy number - it helps if you have an accident.

INSPECTIONS.  New insurance or changes in coverage require signatures, an inspection, and photos.

OWNERSHIP.  Insurance should be in the name of the legal owner of the car. One policy for each car. If you change vehicles you can put your new car on the old policy. If you sell a car and will not replace it, you can sign a letter to INS requesting cancellation of the policy, and INS will process a partial refund.

INSURED VALUE. Cars should be insured at market value. INS does not automatically update values: please contact your agent to do this at policy renewal time, before the grace period commences.

ABROAD.  For cars with Costa Rican registration, coverage is for all Central America and Panama.

DEDUCTIBLES.  Coverages C, D, F and H have standard deductibles. Coverages A, B, G, K and P have none.

RENEWAL.  Auto insurance is normally for six months, after which you have a grace period of 10 working days to pay for renewal.  After that, you would have to apply for new insurance.  If you have an accident in the grace period, renew before claiming.

ALCOHOL. Policy will not pay for accidents to vehicles being driven by persons under the influence of alcohol or drugs, even if the condition did not cause the accident.  An alcohol count of 50mg or more in 100cc of blood will invalidate insurance coverage, except for coverages A and C.

EXCLUSIONS. Vehicles involved in any type of race, rally, riot, combat, or used for any illegal purpose. Vehicles being towed, or on certain ferries. Criminal liability incurred by the insured party.

 FREE  ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE
(For vehicles which have coverage “G”)
Call 800 800 8001 if you are locked out, out of fuel, have a flat, a dead battery, or need a tow truck.

IF YOU HAVE A COLLISION
FIRST OF ALL, FIND OUT WHERE YOU ARE “TICO STYLE”.

  1. SEVERE INJURIES.  Call "Cruz Roja" ambulance at 128 or 911.
  2. CALL THE COPS.  Call a traffic cop "un Tráfico" (2222 9245 or 2222 9330 in the Central Valley) who will go to the scene of the accident.  Be patient and don´t move the cars.
  3. CALL I.N.S.  ASAP, phone 800 800 8000 (toll free) and ask them to send an inspector. Give your car’s tag number or policy number. (If they tell you an inspector can’t go, ask for a claim number to prove you called.) The INS inspector will fill out an Accident Report and give you further instructions.
  4. TAKE NAMES ADDRESSES, phones and particulars of witnesses, and of the other car and driver.
  5. DRINKING.  If you think the other driver has been drinking, ask the cop to give him a breathalyzer test ‑ "alcolemia".  Also point this out to the INS inspector.
  6. DON'T MOVE THE CARS until the cop tells you.  If you need a tow truck, see ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE above - or ask the INS man or the cop to help you by calling one by radio.  Bargain with the tow trucker, and make sure you get a receipt for the towing fee.
  7. DO NOT ASSUME ANY OBLIGATIONS OR RESPONSIBILITY or make a "deal" with other parties involved in the accident.
  8. SUMMONS. The cop at the scene of the accident will give each driver an illegible green ticket, which is a summons to appear at the Traffic Court or nearest "Alcaldía".  Ask the cop where and when to go. Do not fail to react to the summons lest you be found guilty by default.
